A Reader by Raymond Pettibon, 1st Ed, Large Paperback, Ed. by Ann Temkin, Hamza Walker
Pettibon's work was originally produced for the attention of his close friends, fellow artists and musicians in the punk scene in Los Angeles in the 70's and early 80's. Here he presents quirky combinations of images and texts, perhaps reflecting his fascination with classic literature and fringes of popular culture. Much of the imagery derives from the world of cartoons. Famous comic heroes like Superman, Jesus Christ and Elvis Presley are joined by the sometimes well-known cartoon characters. This book is an anthology of various writings over the last few thousand years (the oldest extract is from the "Wisdom of Solomon", the most recent is a truly scary extract from Charles Manson's trial testimony), interspersed with Pettibon drawings, and with a good handful of critical essays on the man's work.
