John A Lee was a man of many parts and roles. From a poor background, a troubled later childhood, swagger, WWI soldier where he lost an arm, Socialist, prominent Labour politician, but controversially left out of Cabinet in the first Labour Government of 1935. He was author of several books highlighting the plight of the poor. Although not a Minister, he was influential in advancing NZ's massive State Housing programme and in warning of the country's inadequate defence forces as international tensions rose before WWII. Controversial, charismatic, caring and stubbron Lee fell from favour within the Labour Party and lost his seat in 1943. He remained a respected and influential figure in NZ. The author received full co-operation from Lee in preparing this biography and noted that: "Without his generous acceptance of my right to reach my own conclusions the biography would have been impossible."
