William of Gloucester, Ed. by Giles St Aubyn, 1st Ed, Large HC DJ, Pioneer Prince

$139.99

Prince William was one of the most outstanding young men of his generation - adventurous, independent and courageous - he was no stranger to hardship or danger. He was a great sportsman and loved travelling, exploring, climbing, flying, skiing and polo, to name just a few of his interests, and to all of which he applied daring and energy. This book is a potrait of a man who always preferred to be judged by his own achievements than as a member of the Royal Family. From his childhood, through his education at Eton, Cambridge and in America, we see his strength of character develop. We read of his travels, postings to Nigeria and Japan, farming, flying, his family, and finally his tragic death in a flying accident. The book has been edited by Mr. St. Aubyn at the request of H.R.H. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester and is based on Prince William's own letters and recollections of his relations, friends and colleagues. From his letters we learn of his opinions, thoughts and feelings on many aspects of life, political and social, which show him to be a man of extraordinary understanding and insight. Princess Alice writes on his childhood and there are contributions from Princess Margaret, Princess Chichibu, The Earl of Shaftesbury, Lord Hailsham, The Rt. Hon. Malcolm McDonald, the former Dean of Windsor, Sir John Pilcher and Sir John Colville, and many of his contemporaries. It is extensively illustrated with Prince William's own photographs and from his family albums.

Published by Frederick Muller in 1977. 1st Ed, 1st printing. Large hard cover with dust jacket. Copy in GC, light edge wear and a few small tears to DJ's extremities, previous owner's name on front free end page, pages very lightly tanned. Handsome copy of a scarce text.
